Encouragement delivered to your inbox

In the midst of navigating dementia care tasks, like so many caregivers, you may find you neglect your own needs.

Maybe you don’t eat the same way you used to, maybe you’re dehydrated, maybe you’re running on less sleep, sacrificing yourself to care for your loved one. And maybe tending to your spiritual needs has also found its way to the backburner.

It might feel like “one more thing” to add to your already long list, but I deeply believe this is the first thing we should attend to, to have the strength to tend to anything else.

And even if you're doing well spiritually, you know that extra encouragement, especially on the dementia journey, is always welcome.

We are meant to keep ourselves well-fed spiritually.

Put On Your Life Vest is designed to help you do that.

Put On Your Life Vest is nourishment for your spirit

Put On Your Life Vest is a year-long devotional specifically designed for the dementia caregiver. It focuses on one topic per week, so you can customize it to fit your busy schedule. The struggles you face as you love and care for someone with dementia are addressed, and always tied back to scripture, to connect you to our Source, to encourage you and keep you going.

To get started, sign up and give the email address that will receive your weekly devotional.

Every Sunday, you'll receive an email with scripture, a reflection, and a prayer, specific to the dementia caregiver journey, along with prompts to take you further throughout the week.

Do as much or as little as fits in your schedule. It is designed to be flexible to your life.

You'll be guided to dig deeper into scripture, to journal about how you can apply this to your life, to do some spiritual self-care, and to maintain a gratitude practice.

If it sounds like a lot, don't worry...you can pick and choose how much to do and when. It's one topic for the entire week.

My wife is in her ninth year of diagnosis and I get so worn down. I really look forward to Dr. B's Sunday post. She always shares “nuggets” that seem they were written just for me, wisdom from her experience in the caregiver’s world, and even greater wisdom in a pearl she finds in God’s Word. When I read it I draw closer to the source of real power to get me through another week - The One True Living God!

Receiving encouragement in my inbox that is specific to what I am struggling with as a caregiver for my husband has been such a blessing to me. Dementia is so lonely and isolating it helps to feel like someone gets it. Sometimes I think Dr. Baker must be spying on me, her posts are so spot on! I go back to them again and again. Her knowledge of both dementia and the Bible makes a huge difference.

I hate to admit that finding time for God is often a struggle, but I feel like most caregivers in this situation would understand that. Getting bite-sized chunks in my email helps me stay connected to God, even if I can only carve out a few minutes once a week. Having it relate to dementia and caregiving is a bonus, and I know it has made a difference in how I care for my mom.

Hi. I'm Dr. Lisa K. Baker and I'm so glad you're here.

I’m a seminary-trained licensed clinical geropsychologist and dementia coach, but you might also call me a caregiver for caregivers, a dementia whisperer, or even just a safe place to land on a heavy day.

I’ve been there. I know what it’s like to feel alone in your struggle, to be burned to the bottom of your reserves, but to feel like you have to keep going, that there is no other choice...and because you love them so much, you wouldn’t make another choice. But it doesn’t mean this isn’t hard, and sometimes downright impossible. I see you, what you’re really going through, what you’re giving, and what it’s costing you.

I use the fullness of my theological and psychological training and my personal experiences with dementia to bring caregivers encouragement when you need it most, to point you to the Great Counselor and Comforter, the source of our strength and peace and joy.

Tending your spirit is one of the most important things you can do on this journey to not only survive but to find your way to thriving. I want to help you so that you can find more of the joy, and not feel like you’re running on fumes.

Those I work with appreciate that I bring my whole heart and soul to my work. They know that I get it, that I do my best to put myself in their shoes, and to come alongside them and help them find their way. And they know I love Jesus more than anything and believe God is with us in every battle.

How much time will the weekly devotional take?

Really, as little or as much time as you have to give to it. It’s designed to fit your life. If you only have a few minutes to read the scripture and reflection, then that can be your “bread” for the week.

If you have more time, there are prompts and suggestions to guide you into the study of the Scripture and your own reflections. You do what you can, as you can.

What if I feel too overwhelmed to keep up?

You set the pace. None of this is time-sensitive and it will wait for you. I recommend choosing one aspect of the devotional that you find most helpful to focus on, to tap into God's peace to decrease the overwhelm.

When will I get my first devotional?

The first entry will show up in your inbox just a few minutes after purchase. After that, a new devotional will appear in your inbox every Sunday for a year.
