Of the many factors which contribute to how well a person speaks English, pronunciation seems to be the most salient. Having a sound knowledge of pronunciation is important for a number of reasons. Firstly, it makes you aware of the features which do not exist in L2. Secondly, dealing with pronunciation will help learners spot their strengths and weaknesses. Lastly, good pronunciation is vital in developing both listening and speaking skills.
This webinar focuses on integrating teaching pronunciation systematically. It will highlight the importance of appropriate exposure and illustrate pronunciation issues BP Speakers of English learners may face. We will discuss some procedures using pronunciation work as a springboard to develop language competence.
It is widely known that English has its own distinctive features, based on its particular intonation, rhythm and stress patterns. According to Gower (1995:153) ‘working on pronunciation is important for two main reasons: to help learners understand the spoken English they hear, and to help them make their own speech more comprehensible and meaningful to others’.
Kenworthy (1987) says that the native language will be the most influential factor as the more L1 is different from L2, the more difficulties SS will face. Thus, a good knowledge of both English and one’s native phonological systems seems to be necessary to achieve a comfortable intelligibility level.
