This workshop is for all teachers who would like to know how to design fair, yet challenging, tests that accurately gauge student learning!

THE MAXIMUM NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS IS 40

Testing is an integral part of learning. Most of our daily activities might be considered to be measurements of progress toward mastery of skills or knowledge. We very often welcome these opportunities for both work and fun. But when these opportunities become part of our academic life, we often dread them and rarely feel any sense of fun. However, in reality academic tests are similar to real-life tests. They help us measure our progress toward mastery of a particular skill. Tests are not a representation of how smart, talented, or skilled we are but rather are a measurement only of what we know about a specific subject at a specific point in time. What is more they are extraordinary learning opportunities.

A notable concern of many teachers is that they frequently have the task of constructing tests but have relatively little training or information to rely on in this task.

In this workshop:

Teachers will gain an awareness of appropriate principles for developing and using tests in their teaching that may help them in avoiding common pitfalls in student progress as well as assessment:

- what makes a test good or bad?

- types of examination questions

- open-ended vs close-ended question types

- subjective vs objective tests

- making effective test questions
